How it works

    Pick your city

    Choose from the menu here or in the top-left corner of the display. Your choice is saved in the page address, so a bookmark brings it straight back.

    Open it in your TV's web browser, or cast it from a phone or computer. Step-by-step for every kind of TV is below.

    New events are added every morning and evening, past ones drop off on their own, and the weather keeps moving forward.

Put it on your TV

The best setup runs the page on the TV itself, so no phone or computer has to stay on. The address to type is localeventsbc.ca/tv.

Best

Smart TV with a web browser

Samsung, LG, Hisense and most recent smart TVs

  1. Open the TV's browser: Internet on Samsung, Web Browser on LG, Browser on Hisense.
  2. Type localeventsbc.ca/tv and pick your city in the top-left corner.
  3. Choose Full screen, and bookmark the page so it's one click next time.
Best

Fire TV, Google TV, Android TV

Fire TV Stick, Chromecast with Google TV, Android TV boxes

  1. Install a free browser app: Amazon Silk Browser on Fire TV, or a TV browser such as TV Bro from Google Play on Google TV / Android TV.
  2. Open localeventsbc.ca/tv and pick your city.
  3. Choose Full screen and bookmark it.

Chromecast, from a computer

Any Chromecast or TV with Chromecast built in, plus Chrome on Windows, Mac or Linux

  1. Open localeventsbc.ca/tv in Chrome.
  2. Click the ⋮ menu, then Cast, save and share → Cast….
  3. Under Sources choose Cast tab, then pick your TV.

The computer stays on and keeps the tab open while it casts.

Android phone or tablet

To a Chromecast, Google TV or a TV with Chromecast or Smart View

  1. Open localeventsbc.ca/tv in Chrome and turn the phone sideways.
  2. Swipe down twice and tap Screen cast (called Smart View on Samsung phones), or open the Google Home app, pick your TV and tap Cast my screen.
  3. Pick your TV.

This mirrors the whole phone screen: keep it plugged in and stop it from locking.

iPhone, iPad or Mac

To an Apple TV, or a TV with AirPlay (many Samsung, LG, Sony, Vizio and Roku TVs)

  1. Open localeventsbc.ca/tv in Safari. On an iPhone or iPad, turn it sideways.
  2. Open Control Center and tap Screen Mirroring, then pick your TV.
  3. On a Mac, choose to use the TV as a separate display, drag the Safari window onto it and choose Full screen.

Mirroring keeps the phone busy. A Mac or an old iPad on a charger works well.

Roku

Roku players and Roku TVs (they have no web browser)

  1. On the Roku, open Settings → System → Screen mirroring and allow it.
  2. From an Android phone, use Screen cast / Smart View. From a Windows PC, press Win+K and pick the Roku.
  3. Many newer Rokus also take AirPlay from an iPhone or Mac (see above).

Any computer, with a cable

The simplest of all: a laptop or mini PC plus an HDMI cable

  1. Plug the computer into the TV and choose that HDMI input.
  2. Open localeventsbc.ca/tv in any browser.
  3. Press Full screen (or F11).

Tips for a screen that stays on

  • Turn off the TV's sleep timer or auto power off, usually under Eco or Power settings.
  • If a phone or computer is casting, keep it on its charger and stop it going to sleep.
  • For a screen that runs all day with nothing else tied up, a streaming stick with a browser (Fire TV Stick) is the cheapest set-and-forget option.

Is it really free?

Yes. No app, no account and no sign-up. Open the page and it runs.

Where do the events come from?

They're posted by people in each community's local news subreddit, such as r/SurreyBCNews. Scan the QR code on any event to see the full post. Headlines come from the same communities, and the forecast is from Open-Meteo.

How often does it update?

The event list and headlines are refreshed twice a day, around 6:30 am and 5:30 pm, and the screen picks up the new list on its own. Each event stays on screen for 20 seconds, and every TV showing the same city shows the same event at the same time.

My city isn't listed.
